Biography of Erik Tempelman:
Erik Tempelman (Vlissingen, 1969) studied aerospace engineering at the TU Delft, graduating in 1994 on advanced materials and sustainability – also the subject of his subsequent PhD. He then moved into the automotive industry and worked for the Dutch Institute for Applied Physics (TNO), always working at the intersection of structures, materials, and manufacture. Since 2006 he enjoys a position at the TU Delft as associate professor, and has published on i.a. recycling, life cycle assessment (LCA), critical materials, eco-design, and additive manufacturing. Plus, in the EU-funded project Light.Touch.Matters (2013-2016), he brought together materials scientists and product designers, creating a breakthrough in design-driven materials innovation.
An enthusiastic teacher and competent writer, Erik authored two academic textbooks: “Manufacturing and Design” (Elsevier, 2014) and “NSFD: engineering essays on structures & materials” (Boekengilde 2020). Presently, he is finalizing the “Basisboek Productietechniek” (Boom 2023), and preparing the second edition of his first title. Industry experts are warmly invited to contribute.
Manufacturing and Design presents a fresh view on the world of industrial production: thinking in terms of both abstraction levels and trade-offs. The book invites its readers to distinguish between what is possible in principle for a certain process (as determined by physical law); what is possible in practice (the production method as determined by industrial state-of-the-art); and what is possible for a certain supplier (as determined by its production equipment).

The aim of the Manufacturing Technology Conference is to bring together technicians from the design and manufacturing industry to share knowledge about manufacturability.
